Global sales of bottled water increased 3.6% in 2019 to 14.35 billion gallons from 13.85 billion gallons in 2018, according to data from Beverage Marketing Corp., which was released on May 19. 2019 saw a 3.1% increase in annual per capita consumption to 43.7 gallons from 42.4 gallons. With $19.4 billion in sales, 2018 saw a 5.7% increase from $18.4 billion.

Volume of carbonated soft drinks decreased 0.8% from 12.17 billion gallons in 2018 to 12.07 billion gallons in 2019. In 2018, the amount of carbonated soft drinks consumed per person decreased by 1.5% to 36.8 gallons from 37.3 gallons. The volume of fruit beverages fell 2.5% in 2019 to 2.86 billion gallons from 2.94 billion.

Before the year 2000, the average person’s consumption of soft drinks was consistently more than fifty gallons. By the middle of this decade, Beverage Marketing Corp. anticipates that the bottled water sector will have reached that level.

According to Michael C. Bellas, chairman and CEO of the Beverage Marketing Corp., “bottled water’s rapid rise happened at the same time consumers started demanding healthier forms of rehydration and refreshment, and it was largely responsible for that change in preferences.” Bottled water is a cost-effective, handy, and portable option that can be used for almost any event at any time of day. It became the go-to beverage for those seeking an all-natural way to quench their thirst, cut back on calories, or stay away from artificial sweeteners.
