Unbelievable Foods appoints a new CFO

As company gets ready to introduce new stock-keeping units (SKUs) in foodservice and retail and launch its first plant-based chicken nugget product, Impossible Foods is adding two new leaders to its team.

At the corporation located in Redwood City, California, David Borecky received a promotion to chief financial officer. Alongside newly appointed Chief People Officer Leilani Gayles, he becomes a member of the leadership team.

As chief accounting officer, Mr. Borecky joined Impossible Foods in 2019. In his two years there, he oversaw the company’s financial, tax, and accounting operations and helped it raise $700 million in additional capital. Since January, he has filled in as temporary CFO for David Lee, who departed Impossible Foods to become president of indoor farm manufacturer AppHarvest.

Mr. Borecky worked as a controller at e-commerce technology company Stripe and as a senior manager in finance and corporate development at business software developer Square before joining Impossible Foods. He graduated with honors from Wilfrid Laurier University and York University with a master’s in business. He is a chartered accountant in Canada.United States Certified Public Accountant and serves as an audit chair and board member at agriculture biotechnology startup MustGrow Biologics.

After ten years as senior vice president and chief people officer of the San Francisco Giants, Ms. Gayles joins Impossible Foods to oversee talent management, staffing, employee relations, remuneration, and performance management. Prior to that, she had experience working in a variety of settings related to human resources, including large technology businesses and startups experiencing rapid expansion. The University of San Francisco awarded her a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in organizational behavior. She also serves as a senior fellow at the American Leadership Forum’s Silicon Valley branch.

Patrick Brown, MD, PhD, the founder and CEO of Impossible Foods, said, “Leilani and David are extraordinary leaders who share our vision of turning back the clock on climate change by transforming the global food system.”

As Impossible Foods prepares for a phase of category development, the new executives join the company. Along with other new SKUs in grocery stores and restaurants, the business recently revealed plans to introduce its first plant-based chicken product—made from sunflower oil and texturized soy—at foodservice locations this fall.
