Scoular decides to build a new barley protein plant in Idaho.
JEROME, IDAHO The Scoular Co. declared on August 11 that Jerome, Idaho, will be the site of the production of a novel plant-based, plant-based protein substitute derived from barley.
Scoular plans to construct a 15,000-square-foot plant to produce barley protein concentrate, which is intended for use in pet food and aquaculture feed. On four acres south of Scoular’s current livestock feed ingredients factory in Jerome, the building will be built. It is anticipated that the enterprise would start manufacturing in May 2021 and generate 13 employment.
According to Jerome Mayor Dave Davis, “We’re very excited that The Scoular Co. chose Jerome as the site for this new investment.” “The city is appreciative of Scoular’s continued display of its enduring dedication to our community.”
According to JC Olson, product group manager for Scoular, the Omaha, Nebraska-based company chose Jerome in south-central Idaho because of its closeness to its esteemed grain grower clients and end markets for the produced goods. The state that produces the most barley in the US is Idaho. Several grain handling facilities and a livestock feed plant in Jerome are part of Scoular’s operations in Idaho.
The new manufacturing facility is expected to process 1.9 million bus of barley a year at first, and over the following few years, capacity is expected to increase. An We will co-produce a high-energy liquid feed additive for cow feeders.
Mr. Olson stated, “We’re excited to be investing in Jerome and the state of Idaho.” “Farmers in the Magic Valley area and throughout Idaho will benefit from a new market and increased stability brought about by this facility and novel barley product.”
The barley protein concentrate, or BPC, was produced and sold exclusively in North America and Asia by Scoular and Montana Microbial Products, according to a June announcement. BPC is produced without the use of harsh chemicals or solvents using non-GMO barley. For aquaculture and pet food manufacturers looking to add high-protein nutrition to their formulations, BPC will offer a clean label, non-GMO alternative.
