Olymel discloses Alberta’s layoffs

Over the next few weeks, Olymel LP, a Canadian processor and distributor of pig and poultry, will be laying off one hundred people.

Thirty more temporary layoffs are scheduled for this week, according to a corporate representative, who stated thirty temporary layoff notifications were issued last week.

Olymel announced that after ten years of service, employees over 60 would be eligible for an early retirement incentive scheme. According to the spokeswoman, 20 more persons indicated interest in the program, and four people have already signed contracts for it.

“We are also considering other mitigating measures that may contribute to a decrease in the quantity of temporary layoffs,” stated Olymel. “We are keeping an eye on the situation and will make the necessary adjustments over the next few weeks to ensure that we have the required number of employees. These adjustments will depend on the effectiveness of the special early retirement incentive program and the plant’s natural turnover rate, which is the non-replacement of voluntary departures.”

At the time, Olymel stated that the closure of the sow farms would result in a net reduction of about 200,000 market hogs per year from company-owned farms to the Olymel Red Deer slaughter facility.

Olymel announced in April of last year that it was closing a large hog processing plant in Quebec, which resulted in the loss of 994 jobs. And in February 2023, Olymel indicated it would close two further hog processing units.
