In September, Chicory ran a survey to gather data and identify trends throughout its shoppable recipe network, which comprises 5.4 million recipes spread over 1,450 recipe sites and receives 100 million unique monthly visits. Surveys of first-party consumers were also carried out.

According to the poll, 59% of millennials intended to host holiday gatherings and prepare holiday meals for the first time this year. According to Yuni Sameshima, co-founder and CEO of Chicory, many millennials will entertain their immediate relatives and friends instead of going to their parents’ house, creating something like to the small “quarantine bubbles” that are currently taking place. 71% of respondents across all age groups stated they intended to spend the holidays with fewer people.

“Smaller groups will be the big thing from a consumer perspective,” Mr. Sameshima stated.

According to him, “easy” is one of the most searched terms for recipes on the internet, thus people are looking for straightforward dishes.

Pies, casseroles, and other baked goods should be plentiful on Thanksgiving tables, but finger appetizers, dips, and spreads may not be present.

“They won’t be using their hands to serve food,” Chicory’s public relations manager Shanna Zhou stated.

According to Chicory, brands have a chance to offer solutions to consumers who are looking for simple pre-meal appetizer substitutes that still adhere to safe handling and serving procedures.

From June to Thanksgiving, casserole recipe views on Chicory increased by 178% in 2019. This year, the percentage may be considerably greater. According to Ms. Zhou, a spike in center-of-store sales of jarred pasta sauce and dry pasta could result from an increase in pasta casseroles like lasagna. Apple pies, pumpkin pies, and toasty spices like nutmeg and cinnamon ought to be well-liked.

Chicory predicts two more holiday trends: internet grocery shopping and financial consciousness. According to Chicory’s research, 46% more consumers than the previous year intend to get food online, and 70% more said they will be more cost-conscious while buying supplies for the holidays.

“There are more people considering couponing and budgeting this year than there were at this time last year, undoubtedly for a variety of reasons, including the state of the economy,” Mr. Sameshima stated.
