Frito-Lay and Quaker team up to launch an R&D facility.

At the R&D headquarters of parent company PepsiCo, Frito-Lay and Quaker have teamed to build a Greenhouse Learning Centre. According to PepsiCo, the Learning Centre will serve as a focal point for innovations in compostable packaging and offer the resources needed to monitor, assess, and evaluate various biodegradable packaging solutions.

By the year 2025, PepsiCo hopes to have all of its product packaging recyclable, compostable, biodegradable, or reusable thanks to the recently announced PepsiCo Positive (pep+) project.

“Our goal for sustainable packaging is to create a world in which packaging is never wasted,” stated PepsiCo senior vice president of research and development Denise Lefebvre. Our own compostable snack packaging technologies are being actively modified. We’re encouraging the industry to adopt these improvements by sharing these technology. Prioritising, funding, and accelerating initiatives are all part of our efforts to create a more inclusive, circular economy.

Adjacent to the existing biodegradable packaging prototyping lab is the Greenhouse Learning Centre. The company aims to accelerate the innovation timeline from testing to certification-ready by two or three times by utilising the Learning Center’s services. The Learning Centre will also be accessible to guests, co-ops, partners, and stakeholders as an educational resource.

Chief sustainability officer of Frito-Lay and Quaker David Allen stated, “We look forward to leveraging key findings from the Greenhouse Learning Centre, alongside our scale, reach, and expertise across North America and globally, to drive progress across our organisation and the entire industry.” “Together, we must inspire positive change for the planet and people, and Quaker and Frito-Lay are honoured to be at the forefront of this movement.”

Going ahead, PepsiCo’s primary focus will be developing packaging that is both biodegradable and suitable for home composting. To that end, the corporation intends to leverage the tools available at the Learning Centre.
