Dole recalling packaged salads due to Listeria contamination
Dole Food Co.’s business subsidiary Dole Fresh Vegetables, Inc. is recalling branded and private label bagged salads because they might contain Listeria monocytogenes contamination. The corporation has stopped operations at the plants in Yuma, Arizona, and Bessemer City, North Carolina, where the items were processed.
This week, there have been two packaged salad recalls. Fresh Express, a Chiquita corporate affiliate, stopped producing salad kits at its Streamwood, Illinois, facility on December 21 and recalled the product.
According to the Food and Drug Administration, 16 people in 13 states have become ill as a result of a Listeria outbreak. Two fatalities and twelve hospitalisations have been linked to the outbreak.
A sample of the epidemic strain matched two product samples from the Dole factories.
According to Frank Yiannas, deputy commissioner of food policy and response for the FDA, “this is the second Listeria outbreak that the FDA and CDC are currently investigating.” The incident may have been connected to bagged salads. A separate outbreak investigation into Listeria discovered in Fresh Express packed salad was declared on December 21. When more information regarding these outbreaks becomes available, the FDA will publish updates. We encourage customers to stay away from all recalled products in the interim.
