Through a number of new packaging efforts, The Coca-Cola Co. is moving closer to its sustainability targets.

In the US, the business is launching a brand-new 13.2-oz bottle composed entirely of recycled plastic (rPET). In the Northeast, Florida, and California, the bottle will be available for Coke, Diet Coke, Coke Zero Sugar, and flavored Coca-Cola beverages starting in February. This summer, the 13.2-oz bottle will be available nationwide across several sparkling beverage brands.

The bottle was created to provide a more practical and drinkable amount size, according to the firm. It is the first Coca-Cola container constructed entirely of rPET in the United States.

According to Tammy Lee, brand manager at Coca-Cola Trademark, “consumers who are always on the go have been telling us they want an option like this, because it’s just the right amount for the’snacking’ occasion.” “We think this innovation offers sustainability and convenience in one package.”

In California, New York, and Texas, 20-oz bottles composed entirely of rPET are being introduced for use in Coca-Cola branded beverages as part of the portfolio approach. In March and July, respectively, Dasani and Smartwater will introduce 20-oz bottles composed entirely of rPET, following suit.

Also, the business is launching a brand-new 13.2-oz clear bottle for Sprite that is composed entirely of rPET. According to Coca-Cola, the transparent packaging facilitates recycling and reusing bottles to create new ones. By the end of 2022, the business wants to switch to clear packaging for all Sprite bottles.

“With our size and capabilities, we understand our special chance and obvious obligation to contribute to the global plastic crisis,” stated Alpa Sutaria, vice president and general manager of sustainability at The Coca-Cola Co.’s North American division. “These innovations in the US represent meaningful action that focus not just on what goes into the bottles, but on innovation of the bottles themselves.” Plastic is a rich resource for packaging.

The organization’s biggest on-packaging message campaign to date will be combined with the new projects. Each 100% rPET product will include a “Recycle Me Again” statement on the label in addition to on-cap marketing. According to Coca-Cola, the innovations will cut the company’s plastic usage throughout its North American portfolio by more than 20% from 2018 levels and will save over 10,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions yearly in the US.
