Closed $8.1 million pilot round for The Better Meat Co.

CALABASA, CALIF. — The Better Meat Co., a food tech firm, closed a $8.1 million seed round, increasing its total funding since its 2018 inception to $9.7 million.

The ingredients company provides meat industries with plant protein formulations. For instance, Perdue Farms incorporates components from Better Meat Co. in its line of Perdue Chicken Plus nuggets.

“Planet-friendly plant protein formulas that enhance meat are a win-win for consumers and the environment,” said Paul Shapiro, CEO of Better Meat Co. “Meat consumers are increasingly diversifying their protein sources.”

Green Circle Foodtech Ventures and Greenlight Capital co-led the seed round. Participating in the round were Lever VC and Johnsonville Holdings, the parent business of Johnsonville Sausage.

“Stu Strumwasser, managing director of Green Circle Capital and a board member of The Better Meat Co., expressed his amazement at the company’s ability to offer its customers clean label plant-based formulas that mix in seamlessly with ground meats, often at a lower cost.” The thought leaders’ approach of collaborating with large meat companies also caught our attention

to have an immediate effect on the environment and public health.

The company’s signature meat enhancers are priced competitively with normal meats, free of allergens, and have a clean label. It offers enhancers for items made with pork, turkey, fish, and crab in addition to beef and chicken.
