A salad kit recall has been issued by Fresh Express.

Fresh Express, a Chiquita corporate entity, has stopped production at its plant in Streamwood, Illinois, and is recalling salad kits connected to a Listeria monocytogenes outbreak.

The Food and Drug Administration reports that ten cases of the epidemic strain have been recorded from eight states. Ten hospital admissions as well as one fatality have been linked to the outbreak.

According to Frank Yiannas, the FDA’s deputy commissioner for food policy and response, “the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development collected a sample of Fresh Express prepackaged romaine and sweet butter lettuce as part of their routine sampling efforts.” The sample matched the epidemic strain and had a positive test result for Listeria monocytogenes.

In light of this, Fresh Express decided to stop production at its Streamwood, Illinois, facility and started a recall of some of the branded and private label salad varieties that were made there.
