A new coalition to advance California’s plant-based interests

A new political advocacy group called the California Plant Based Alliance will advocate for legislative representation for the plant-based business. The alliance will support legislative changes aimed at granting plant-based product access to California consumers as well as equal access and equitable possibilities for plant-based product manufacturers.

According to Judie Mancuso, the founder and president of the California Plant Based Alliance, “what we found when advancing and passing plant-based bills in the Capitol is that the plant-based industry does not have a voice such as the various segments of the animal agriculture industry.” “To obtain equitable access to the market, we will strengthen the voice of the growing plant-based industry in the Capitol.”

She claimed that the alliance came to her while she was advocating for a bill that California state senator Nancy Skinner had presented, which would have required prisons, hospitals, and healthcare facilities to serve plant-based meals to inmates. 2018 saw the bill’s passage into law.

“Judie, there’s really a big hole here; there’s definitely a niche that needs to be filled,” said my lobbyist. stated Ms. Mancuso.

One of the California Plant Based Alliance’s main areas of interest is providing incentives to public schools so they may provide plant-based options for kids who want them. Another priority is working on labeling-related concerns, such as whether plant-based businesses may use the terms “milk” and “meat” on product labels.

Almonds soak in water when they are placed in this manner.what do you get?” Ms. Mancuso said. “You get almond milk. When you open up a coconut, what’s inside? Oh, it’s called coconut meat.”

In addition, Ms. Mancuso founded and serves as president of Social Compassion in Legislation, a political advocacy group that focuses on legislation pertaining to animal care, rights, and protection.

According to her, the California Plant Based Alliance is not membership-based but rather a 501(c)(4) political advocacy organization. Donations are instead received by the alliance.Because they are like-minded and want to help, “there are a whole bunch of people that give $10, $25, $50, $100, and then a handful of people that might give $5,000, $10,000, even a couple that gives $100,000,” Ms. Mancuso said.

The Plant Based Foods Association, a nationwide organization with its headquarters in Sacramento, is unrelated to the alliance. The Plant Based Foods Association is a 501(c)(6) membership trade association with over 170 member companies, 100 affiliate members, and a board of directors composed exclusively of executives from plant-based food companies. California is home to 41 of the company’s members, including Beyond Meat and Impossible Foods.

Jennifer Fearing, president of Fearless Advocacy, is the new lobbyist for California that the Plant Based Foods Association has recruited. She will collaborate with Dan Colegrove, who oversees state-level lobbying for the P.B.F.A. nationally, and Michele Simon, executive director of the organization.
